Ragnar Trail Atlanta - Katie Dotson's Race Report

There is just something about trail running that does my heart good - it's quiet, a bit slower paced, mentally and physically challenging.  Plus when you combine it with friends, an all night relay and camping - and you have a great recipe for a fantastic weekend at Ragnar Trail Atlanta!

A Ragnar Trail race is a team of 8 runners that run relay-style on three different single track loops that start and finish at Ragnar Village. Teams run day and night until each member has completed all three trail loops.  Runner 1 runs the Green Loop (hard), then Runner 2 runs the Yellow Loop (harder), Runner 3 runs the Red Loop (really freakin' hard), Runner 4 runs the Green Loop, and so on until every runner has completed the three loops. 

This was my third year racing Ragnar Trail Atlanta and best year by far.  I've been strength training pretty aggressively, running quite a bit and really really really dialing in my nutrition.  The trifecta proved to be the perfect combo!  

I was the 5th runner, which put me on the Yellow Loop first at about 8pm (5.4mi).  Then a quick sleep until my next run at 3am on the Green Loop (4.5mi).  Then another quick sleep and my final run on the Red Loop at 9:45am (5.5mi).  

Each loop felt great!  I felt strong and powerful running the trails and had no nutrition issues - thanks to bringing all my own food with me and sticking with my nutrition plan.  Even better, my paces totally surprised me at 10:00, 9:30, and 9:45 respectively - some of my best times ever.  

Our team even placed 5th overall in our Submasters Coed Category!  And it all started when One Day I felt like Runnin...
