Movement at Podium Sports Medicine
At Podium Sports Medicine, we believe that proper, balanced movement patterns can heal many of the aches and pains that our patients present with. As a consequence of both the active and sedentary parts of our lives, many of us develop dysfunctional and imbalanced movement. This can occur in an insidious manner, presenting only when an athlete develops pain. Movement assessment and the prescription of individualized corrective exercises can help to prevent or treat many such problems.
We often utilize a Functional Movement Screen (FMS) to evaluate patients prior to gait analysis, bike fit, or simply to get a better idea of what might be contributing to their injury.
"Put simply, the FMS is a ranking and grading system that documents movement patterns that are key to normal function. By screening these patterns, the FMS readily identifies functional limitations and asymmetries. These are issues that can reduce the effects of functional training and physical conditioning and distort body awareness." - www.functionalmovement.com.
The FMS consists of seven simple (but not easy!) movements, each of which is scored. It takes only a short time to complete, but the information gained can be useful for diagnostic or preventive purposes. If you are interested in how an FMS might benefit you, call us to learn more.
